Onimusha: Way of the Sword - Controls

Onimusha Way of the Sword Controls Guide

Onimusha: Way of the Sword puts far more emphasis on timing than frantic button pressing. Musashi can use one handed and two handed attacks, defend, parry, dodge, absorb souls and call on the Oni Gauntlet for stronger techniques. The game also offers more than one controller layout, so some buttons can change depending on the control type you select.

The controls below focus on the standard PlayStation layout and the equivalent Xbox inputs. If you change to the alternate control type, check the in game controller diagram because several combat actions move to different buttons.

Alternate Controller Layout

Onimusha: Way of the Sword includes multiple control types. The alternate layout is aimed at players who prefer attacks on the face buttons while keeping guard and parry on a shoulder button.

If parrying feels awkward with the default action focused setup, switching control type can make a noticeable difference. The combat system expects frequent defensive inputs, so there is no advantage in forcing yourself to use a layout that feels uncomfortable.

How One Handed and Two Handed Attacks Differ

Musashi has separate one handed and two handed attacks rather than a simple light and heavy attack system.

One handed strikes are generally quicker and easier to fit between enemy attacks. Two handed attacks have more commitment and are better when you have created a clear opening.

Do not finish every attack string

Enemies can interrupt long strings. Use shorter sequences until you understand how quickly that enemy can retaliate.

How to Parry

Use the Defend / Parry button just as an enemy attack reaches Musashi.

A properly timed defensive input can stop the strike and create a much stronger opportunity than simply holding guard. Boss battles in particular are designed around recognizing attack rhythm rather than blocking everything indefinitely.

Watch the weapon, not only the enemy's body

Large Genma often wind up dramatically before the actual hit. React to the moment the weapon begins traveling toward Musashi rather than the start of the animation.

What Is Issen?

Issen is the signature Onimusha counter technique. It is not a separate button that you can simply press whenever you want.

The attack depends on precise timing around an enemy strike. When performed correctly, Musashi cuts through the opening with a powerful counter that can deal enormous damage.

If you are new to Onimusha, practice Issen timing on ordinary enemies before trying to rely on it during a boss fight.

How Deflect Works

Deflect is another timing based defensive technique that lets Musashi meet an incoming weapon rather than simply absorbing the attack.

The important thing is to avoid treating parry and deflect like panic buttons. Watch the attack sequence, respond once and then see whether the enemy continues its combo before attacking back.

How to Dodge

Press Cross on PlayStation or A on Xbox while moving in the direction you want to evade.

Dodging is useful against attacks that are difficult to parry, wide area attacks and situations where staying directly in front of the enemy is dangerous.

Dodge around an enemy instead of always backward

Sideways movement can keep you close enough to punish the recovery animation. Repeatedly dodging backward may keep you safe but can also throw away your best attack opportunity.

How Soul Absorption Works

Defeated Genma release souls that can be absorbed through the Oni Gauntlet.

Hold L2 on PlayStation or LT on Xbox when souls are nearby. Soul absorption is a central part of Onimusha progression and combat, so get into the habit of collecting them after encounters.

Do not absorb blindly during a fight

Absorbing souls can leave you exposed if another enemy is already attacking. Create a safe moment first.

Oni Armament

Oni Armament gives Musashi access to supernatural offensive power through the Oni Gauntlet.

Use R1 on PlayStation or RB on Xbox for the assigned Oni Armament action. These attacks are especially useful when normal sword pressure is not enough to break through a difficult enemy.

Oni Bow

The Oni Bow provides a ranged option and is assigned to R2 on PlayStation or RT on Xbox with the standard action focused layout.

Use it against distant threats, elevated enemies or situations where approaching directly would put you at an unnecessary disadvantage.

Lock On Is Important in Duels

Press R3 or the Right Stick to focus on an enemy.

Locking on makes it easier to read sword attacks and maintain correct positioning during one on one fights. In crowded encounters, unlocking can sometimes give you better awareness of enemies approaching from another direction.

Items and Quick Access

The D Pad is used for item related actions and quick selection. Keep healing or other frequently used resources in positions you can reach without looking away from the fight.

Learn the Defensive Timing First

The controls in Onimusha: Way of the Sword are easy to memorize. The difficult part is knowing exactly when to use them. Spend your first encounters learning parry timing, dodge distance and the difference between quick one handed attacks and slower two handed strikes.

Once those basics become automatic, Issen counters and Oni abilities start fitting naturally into combat instead of feeling like separate mechanics you need to remember.
