Marvel's Wolverine - Controls

Marvel's Wolverine Controls Guide

Marvel's Wolverine is built around aggressive close range combat, but button mashing will only get Logan so far. Parries, dodges, kicks, Special Techniques and the Rage system all become part of the normal combat rhythm, while Enhanced Senses help with tracking and stealth outside a straight fight.

The controls below cover the default PS5 setup confirmed in the current preview build. Marvel's Wolverine also supports full controller remapping, presets and several accessibility options that can change how holds, repeated presses and combat inputs behave.

Four Special Techniques can be equipped at the same time. Because the controller can be completely remapped, your own button layout may differ after changing a preset or creating custom bindings.

Light Attacks and Claw Combos

Square is the basic claw attack and forms the backbone of Logan's normal combos.

Do not treat it as a single repeated attack. Techniques unlock additional strings and combo routes, so sequences involving Square and Triangle can produce different finishers as Logan develops.

The important habit is to watch the enemy rather than automatically completing every combo. Wolverine fights aggressively, but stronger opponents are designed to punish careless strings.

How to Kick Enemies

Hold Square instead of tapping it to perform a powerful kick.

The kick is particularly useful against guarding enemies because it can break their defense and create stagger opportunities.

Kick enemies into walls

A wall collision can immediately stagger an opponent and leave them open for a brutal follow up barrage.

Cliffs and environmental hazards can be even better. If an enemy is standing near a dangerous edge, positioning can be worth more than another normal combo.

How Parrying Works

Press L1 shortly before a melee attack connects.

Basic enemies may stagger after one clean parry, while tougher opponents can require you to parry an entire attack sequence before they become vulnerable.

That means a successful first parry does not always mean it is your turn to attack.

Watch for Reckless Attacks

Certain dangerous enemy attacks are visually signalled. These require more deliberate reactions and can punish poor timing heavily.

When you are still learning an enemy, dodging is often safer than trying to prove you can parry every move immediately.

Dodge or Parry?

Parrying keeps Logan close and can create a direct counter opportunity. Dodging gives up some pressure but provides a safer answer when you do not yet understand the incoming attack.

Use parry against predictable melee strings and dodge when you see an unfamiliar attack, a large area attack or a situation where several enemies are threatening Logan at once.

How Special Techniques Work

Hold L2 and use the assigned face button to perform one of Logan's equipped Special Techniques.

Up to four Special Techniques can be equipped at once. They recharge after use, which means they are designed to become part of normal combat rather than something saved forever for a boss.

Tornado Spin

Tornado Spin sends Logan through enemies around him and is useful when a group has surrounded you.

Knee Breaker

Knee Breaker can interrupt an enemy and is useful for stopping pressure before it develops into a full attack sequence.

Spiral Strike

Spiral Strike gives Logan another aggressive way to drill into a target and maintain momentum.

Special Technique Shortcuts

Marvel's Wolverine allows Special Techniques to be assigned to controller shortcuts.

The four D Pad directions can also be configured as shortcuts through the controller settings. This is useful if you want fast access to a favorite technique without changing your normal combat flow.

How to Extend Wolverine's Claws Manually

Press L2 + R2 while outside combat to extend or retract Logan's claws.

This is primarily a character interaction rather than a combat requirement, but it is a nice detail for players who want Logan wandering around with the claws ready.

Rage Changes How You Fight

Successful attacks, parries and kills build Logan's Rage.

Rage is divided into three tiers, and its role changes as the meter grows. At higher tiers Logan becomes increasingly dangerous, while the system also connects directly to his ability to survive severe damage.

Rage Tier 2

At the second tier, Logan's attacks become stronger and Last Stand becomes available. If he is fully downed, Rage can help his Healing Factor pull him back into the fight.

Rage Tier 3

Maximum Rage turns Logan into a much more dangerous fighter. His attacks become stronger and brutal Critical Strike opportunities become available.

The best way to use Rage is not simply to watch the meter fill. Stay aggressive enough to build it while still respecting parry and dodge timing.

Critical Strikes

Staggered enemies and certain combat situations can create Critical Strike opportunities.

These are powerful finishing attacks and can involve Logan using an enemy's own weapon against them. Watch for the prompt rather than continuing a normal combo automatically.

Enhanced Senses

Logan's Enhanced Senses are used for tracking enemies, following clues and supporting stealth.

They can reveal threats before you enter a room and make it easier to decide which enemy should be removed first.

Enhanced Senses are also useful during exploration when searching for optional activities and collectibles.

Stealth Controls and Takedowns

Some encounters allow Logan to stalk enemies before open combat begins.

Stealth is useful even if you do not intend to clear an entire area quietly. Removing one or two dangerous enemies first reduces pressure once combat begins, and stealth attacks can contribute to Logan's Rage.

Controller Remapping and Accessibility

Marvel's Wolverine offers extensive controller customization on PS5.

You can use preset layouts or create custom mappings. The game also lets you adjust how button holds and repeated presses work, change Dodge behavior and alter Special Technique inputs.

Control Option What It Changes
Controller Remapping Customize the button layout
Dodge Mode Choose Single Tap, Continuous Hold, Toggle or the default behavior
Special Techniques Mode Adjust how Special Technique inputs activate
Melee Mode Choose Single, Combo or Continuous behavior
Sprint Mode Choose Hold, Toggle or Auto options
Repeated Button Presses Change rapid presses to a hold when supported
Stick Sensitivity Adjust camera and stick response
Stick Inversion Change vertical or horizontal camera direction

Can You Make Dodging Easier?

Yes. The Dodge / Parry Input Timing setting changes how much time you are given to successfully react to attacks.

There is also a dedicated Dodge Mode. The default setup uses a single tap to dodge and a double tap to roll, but alternative modes include Continuous Hold and Toggle.

These are useful options if repeated inputs interfere with your timing or you simply prefer a different action game control style.

Get Comfortable with Parry and Kick Early

Square combos are easy to understand, but parrying and kicking are what start opening the combat system up. Learn when to tap L1, practice holding Square to send enemies into walls and start using Special Techniques instead of saving them indefinitely.

Once those actions become instinctive, Logan feels much less like a character who simply attacks quickly and much more like Wolverine controlling an entire room through aggression.
