Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 becomes much easier when you stop thinking of your squad as four characters you happen to carry around. They are four different solutions to whatever ridiculous problem the invading army has just thrown at you.
More than 100 characters can be collected, with hundreds of weapons and accessories available across the game. The trick is not finding one perfect Brother. It is building a squad where somebody always has an answer, whether the problem is a flying enemy, a distant target, a giant crowd or several hundred angry creatures attempting to occupy the exact square of ground you are standing on.
Brother Change Is Your Most Important Skill
If your weapon runs dry, switch. If your current character cannot reach a rooftop, switch. If you are surrounded and another Brother has better mobility, switch.
Character changing is meant to happen constantly. Waiting through every reload while three other armed EDF members are available wastes one of the biggest advantages the game gives you.
Try to reach the point where you know exactly which directional input selects each member. That lets you choose the right character instinctively when the screen fills with enemies.
Build a Team of Specialists
Four characters who all solve the same problem can feel powerful until the game presents something they cannot handle.
A useful squad normally benefits from different roles. Consider having strong mobility, reliable general damage, an option for clearing groups and somebody capable of support or handling dangerous individual targets.
Vertical mobility deserves particular attention. Many maps contain considerable height variation, and a flying character can reach survivors, escape ground enemies and take firing positions that a slower Brother cannot easily access.
Keep One Escape Option Ready
EDF battles have a habit of changing from comfortable to catastrophic in seconds. Keep at least one mobile squad member available for those moments.
A Brother with flight, a strong dash or another fast movement Ability can break away from a swarm before you become trapped. Once you create distance, switch again to somebody with better crowd clearing power and punish the enemies that followed you.
Mobility is not simply for travelling across the map faster. It is one of your best defensive tools.
Switch Instead of Waiting for a Reload
This is one of the simplest ways to improve immediately. Fire until a weapon needs attention, then change to another squad member and continue attacking.
Rotate through characters when the situation allows it rather than watching a lengthy reload animation during a major enemy wave. Weapons with powerful attacks and inconvenient reload times become much easier to use when the entire squad shares the workload.
Give the Squad Different Engagement Ranges
A team built entirely around short range damage can destroy enemies nearby and still struggle badly against distant or airborne threats.
Try to cover several ranges. A reliable rifle or similar general purpose weapon is useful for ordinary enemies, while longer range weapons help against targets that refuse to cooperate by standing directly in front of you.
Area attacks provide another answer when individual damage stops being enough because the screen contains far too many targets.
Owner Weapons Are Worth Checking
World Brothers 2 gives characters a reason to use weapons associated with them through the Owner Weapon system. Equipping the relevant Owner Weapon can provide a damage advantage.
That does not mean you must always use the default pairing. As characters develop, additional weapon categories become available and unusual combinations can be extremely effective.
Treat the Owner Weapon as a strong starting point, then experiment when you have enough equipment to build around a specific strategy.
Rescue Brothers and Sisters During Missions
Do not sprint past every stranded EDF member just because the mission objective is somewhere else. Rescuing characters is fundamental to expanding your collection.
A larger roster means more Abilities, SP Moves, Support Abilities and equipment possibilities when a later mission exposes a weakness in your current team.
Rescues also contribute to the game's character and weapon progression systems, making exploration during missions worthwhile when the battlefield gives you enough breathing room.
Duplicates Still Have Value
Finding a character you already own is not automatically a wasted rescue. Duplicate rescues contribute to character progression, so familiar Brothers and Sisters can still strengthen your options.
This is one reason replaying missions remains useful even after you have already seen their basic objectives.
Use Accessories to Fix Weaknesses
Accessories can modify character performance and help turn a good squad concept into a much more dependable one.
Instead of equipping bonuses randomly, ask what each Brother actually needs. A durable close range character may benefit from a different improvement than a mobile character whose job is reaching objectives and rescuing teammates.
Build around roles rather than simply choosing whatever accessory appears strongest in isolation.
Do Not Ignore Support Abilities
A common mistake is comparing characters only through weapon damage. World Brothers 2 gives characters Support Abilities that can make them valuable even when somebody else has the bigger gun.
Healing, enhancement, distraction and other support effects can create the opening your damage focused characters need. On higher difficulties, utility becomes increasingly valuable because simply standing still and trading damage with a huge enemy group is rarely a sustainable plan.
Use SP Moves Before the Mission Is Already Lost
Players often save powerful attacks for later and eventually finish a mission with resources they barely used.
An SP Move is valuable when it prevents a dangerous situation from becoming worse. Large enemy groups, strong targets and moments when your team is being surrounded are sensible opportunities.
Learn which characters charge SP quickly and what each move is actually good at. A spectacular animation does not automatically mean the move should be used against the same type of target every time.
Prioritise the Enemy Creating the Problem
When dozens of enemies appear, firing at whichever target happens to be closest is not always the best answer.
Look for the threat making the battle difficult. That could be an enemy attacking from range, an airborne target forcing you out of position or something continuously adding pressure while smaller creatures distract you.
Removing the correct target can make the entire battlefield calmer even if plenty of weaker enemies remain.
Fight From Space, Not From the Middle of the Swarm
EDF loves surrounding the player. Do not make that easier by walking directly into the centre of every enemy group.
Create distance and let enemies approach through a direction your weapons can cover. Characters with movement Abilities are particularly good at relocating before the crowd closes completely.
If you do become surrounded, switch to your best escape character rather than stubbornly continuing to fire with somebody who can barely move.
High Ground Can Change a Fight
Buildings and elevated terrain are useful for more than sightseeing. Height can provide cleaner firing angles and make some ground based enemies considerably easier to manage.
A flying Brother can reach elevated positions quickly and then hand control to a squad member with better ranged or area damage. Character switching lets you combine one Brother's mobility with another Brother's firepower.
That interaction is one of the most useful techniques in World Brothers 2.
Protect Your Last Healthy Character
When a squad member goes down, you still have options. When several go down, every remaining mistake becomes more expensive.
Do not rush blindly toward a fallen teammate through the same enemy group that defeated them. Create space, remove immediate threats and use a mobile character to approach when a safer opportunity appears.
Recovering one teammate can begin rebuilding the entire squad. Losing your final active character ends that possibility.
Experiment With Weapons Instead of Chasing One Perfect Choice
World Brothers 2 contains more than 600 weapons and accessories, and the roster can eventually use a wide variety of equipment as character skills develop.
Damage is only one part of a useful weapon. Range, reload time, projectile behavior, area coverage and ease of aiming can matter just as much.
Use the game's opportunities to test equipment. A weapon with slightly lower theoretical damage may be far more valuable if you can reliably hit the enemies that matter.
Replay Missions When Your Squad Needs More Strength
There is no shame in returning to completed missions. Replaying stages can help you rescue additional characters, improve your roster, gain equipment and strengthen Armor before tackling a mission that has become a wall.
Higher difficulties can provide better rewards, but only if you can clear them reliably. A slightly easier mission completed efficiently is often more useful than repeatedly failing a difficulty your current squad cannot yet handle.
Difficulty Is Part of Progression
World Brothers 2 contains five difficulty levels, and later difficulties are intended to challenge developed squads rather than brand new teams.
If you are learning the series, there is little benefit in forcing yourself through a setting that turns every encounter into a grind. Learn how your characters work, improve Armor and equipment, then increase the challenge when the squad is ready.
Use Test Opportunities Before Judging a Character
A Brother can look mediocre on a statistics screen and feel completely different once you understand the movement Ability, Support Ability and weapon interaction.
Test unfamiliar characters rather than immediately returning to the same four favourites. You may discover a movement technique or support option that solves a mission your usual squad struggles with.
Multiplayer Rewards Team Roles Even More
World Brothers 2 supports online cooperative play for up to four players. PlayStation versions also support local split screen for two players.
In cooperative battles, avoid treating every player as an independent damage dealer. Different squads can cover mobility, crowd control, ranged damage and support, giving the group far more answers when a mission becomes chaotic.
Communication also helps with rescues and SP usage. Four players spending their strongest moves on the same nearly defeated enemy is impressive, but not always particularly efficient.
A Simple Squad Formula for Beginners
If you are unsure where to begin, build around four jobs: mobility, dependable general damage, crowd clearing and support or strong single target damage.
Those roles do not have to remain fixed. One Brother may cover two of them, and new weapons can completely change what a character contributes.
That flexibility is the real strength of World Brothers 2. Do not search endlessly for one character who can do everything. Build four characters who can do almost anything when you use them together.
