Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 - Controls

Earth Defense Force World Brothers 2 Controls Guide

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 looks wonderfully chaotic, but its controls make much more sense once you understand one important idea: you are controlling a four member squad rather than a single hero.

You can switch between your four Brothers and Sisters during a mission, giving you four weapons, different movement options, character Abilities, Support Abilities and powerful SP Moves to work with. Learning when to change character is every bit as important as learning how to shoot.

This Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 controls guide covers the main controls on PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and PC, followed by the mechanics that are easy to miss when first joining the EDF. Controls can be changed in the settings, so customised layouts may differ from the defaults.

PlayStation Controls

Action PS5 / PS4 Control
Move Left Stick
Camera / Aim Right Stick
Attack R2
Ability L3
SP Move R3
Jump X
Reload Square
Change Brother / Sister Directional Buttons
Pause Options

Some actions depend on the character you are currently controlling. An Ability input can activate very different movement or combat techniques depending on the Brother or Sister, so learning the character is just as important as remembering the button.

Nintendo Switch Controls

Action Nintendo Switch Control
Move Left Stick
Camera / Aim Right Stick
Attack ZR
Ability Press Left Stick
SP Move Press Right Stick
Jump B
Change Brother / Sister Directional Buttons
Pause Plus

The Switch version follows the same basic combat philosophy as the PlayStation editions. Your most important habit is learning which directional input selects each squad member so you can change characters without looking away from the battle.

PC Keyboard and Mouse Controls

Action PC Control
Move W / A / S / D
Camera / Aim Mouse
Attack Left Mouse Button
Ability Middle Mouse Button
SP Move Z

World Brothers 2 supports keyboard and mouse as well as compatible controllers on PC. If you regularly switch characters or use abilities during intense fights, consider remapping any action that feels awkward to reach. The game rewards quick character changes, so an inconvenient binding can become surprisingly noticeable on harder missions.

How Brother Change Works

Brother Change is the control you should learn before worrying about advanced techniques. Your squad contains four characters and you can change which one you directly control during battle.

Changing character effectively changes your current weapon, movement options and abilities at the same time. This is why World Brothers 2 plays differently from a conventional third person shooter.

If your current weapon needs to reload, you do not always have to stand around waiting. Change to another squad member and continue attacking. The first character can deal with the reload while somebody else keeps the pressure on the enemy.

What Does the Ability Button Do?

Each Brother and Sister has character specific actions, so Ability does not mean the same thing for everyone. Some characters can fly, dash or use a thruster, while others have movement or combat techniques designed around their individual fighting style.

This makes Ability one of the most important controls to test whenever you add somebody new to your squad. A character who feels slow when simply walking may become one of your fastest options once you understand their Ability.

What Are Support Abilities?

World Brothers 2 expands the squad system with Support Abilities. These provide another layer of character utility and can include offensive, defensive or supportive effects depending on the Brother or Sister.

Do not judge a character entirely by the damage of their equipped weapon. A useful Support Ability can solve a problem that raw firepower cannot, especially when your squad needs healing, buffs, crowd control or another form of assistance.

How SP Moves Work

SP Moves are powerful character specific techniques. They require the character's SP gauge, so they cannot simply be used continuously.

The effect varies enormously between characters. An SP Move might devastate a group of enemies, provide useful support or create another powerful battlefield effect.

Do not save every SP Move for a hypothetical emergency that never arrives. Large enemy waves, dangerous priority targets and moments when your team is being surrounded are exactly why the system exists.

Why Character Switching Helps With Reloading

One of the best World Brothers 2 control tricks is treating your four characters like four weapon slots with separate capabilities.

Empty a weapon, switch to another Brother and continue fighting. When you return later, the previous character may be ready to attack again. The same idea is useful when an Ability is unavailable and another member of the squad has the movement or firepower you currently need.

Once you start playing this way, Brother Change stops feeling like a character selection feature and becomes part of the combat rhythm.

How to Rescue a Downed Squad Member

Losing one Brother does not necessarily end the mission. If other squad members remain available, you can continue fighting and attempt to rescue the fallen character.

This makes mobility especially useful. A fast or flying Brother can escape a dangerous group, reach a downed teammate and help restore the strength of the squad.

If two members are already down, protecting the remaining characters becomes far more important than squeezing out a little extra damage.

Vehicles Have Their Own Controls

World Brothers 2 also includes vehicles, and their inputs depend on what you are operating. Vehicle movement, aiming and weapon controls are therefore handled separately from the standard Brother controls.

Give yourself a moment to learn a vehicle before driving directly into the largest enemy group on the map. EDF vehicles can provide substantial firepower, but poor positioning can make that advantage disappear very quickly.

The Controls You Should Learn First

Start with Attack, Ability, Jump, Brother Change and SP Move. Those five concepts explain most of what makes World Brothers 2 different from an ordinary action shooter.

Above all, practise switching characters without thinking about it. When a weapon is reloading, a swarm closes in or an enemy is too far away for your current character, the answer is often already waiting in one of the other three squad slots.
