Blue Prince - Controls

Blue Prince controls guide for PlayStation, Xbox and PC

Blue Prince is controlled like a first-person exploration game, but most of its important decisions happen through drafting screens, objects, floor plans and room-specific interfaces. You walk through Mt. Holly, inspect environmental clues, choose rooms at unopened doors and manage resources through the Blueprint and Room Directory menus.

The default layout is intentionally simple. Cross handles ordinary interactions, Triangle uses the currently held item, Square activates a special item, R2 displays the estate Blueprint and R1 opens the Room Directory. L2 activates Stroll, which reduces movement speed for careful inspection.

The game now supports controller and keyboard remapping. The exact inputs may therefore differ after customization, but the actions and their functions remain the same.

Movement and Camera Controls

Use the left stick or WASD to move through the estate. The right stick or mouse controls the first-person camera and the interaction reticle.

Blue Prince does not require fast reflexes, so there is rarely a reason to rush through an unfamiliar room. Small objects, symbols, documents and tools may be easy to overlook when the camera moves too quickly.

Using Stroll

Hold L2 or LT to Stroll. Strolling reduces movement speed and is useful when examining shelves, desks, paintings, floor markings and clusters of small objects.

Use Stroll when:

  • Searching for a small key, coin or gem.
  • Inspecting a table containing several items.
  • Reading numbers or symbols in the environment.
  • Moving close to an interactive object without passing it.
  • Comparing details in two similar rooms.

The game does not highlight every useful object aggressively. Moving slowly and placing the reticle directly over suspicious items often reveals an interaction that is difficult to notice from the doorway.

Interacting with Doors and Objects

Aim the centre reticle at an object and press Cross, Xbox A or the PC interact input. This is used for doors, documents, switches, keys, safes, terminals, containers and room-specific puzzles.

Door Interactions

An existing door normally opens immediately unless it is locked. A door leading into an empty blueprint space begins a room draft.

Before opening an undrafted door, check the Blueprint. Opening it commits you to choosing one of the offered rooms, so confirm that the doorway points toward a useful square.

Locked Doors

Ordinary locked doors consume a key when opened. Some special doors require another object, mechanism or condition instead.

Do not spend the last key automatically. Check whether another route can reach the same area and whether a more important locked door is visible elsewhere in the estate.

Inspecting Documents

Interact with books, letters, memos and diagrams to read them. Some texts are background material, while others contain information needed much later.

Record unusual names, dates, directions, colors, symbols and repeated phrases. A clue may not become meaningful until a related room appears on another day.

How Room Drafting Controls Work

Opening a door into an empty blueprint square presents three possible rooms. Use the movement controls or cursor to highlight one and press Confirm to draft it.

Before choosing, compare:

  • The room's door arrangement.
  • Its color and category.
  • Its gem cost.
  • Any immediate resource reward.
  • Its rank within the estate.
  • Whether it continues the current route.
  • Whether it creates a dead end.

Open the Blueprint While Drafting

Press R2 or RT to view the estate layout while the three room choices remain available. This is one of the most useful controls in the game.

Check which directions must remain open. A room that appears valuable in isolation may close the only route toward the northern side of the house.

Choosing a Room

Confirming a room normally places it permanently for the current day. There is no ordinary undo command, so do not press Confirm until you have checked its doors and cost.

Rotating Rooms

Most drafted rooms have fixed orientations, but special effects can sometimes allow rotation. When rotation is available, use the displayed command and inspect every orientation before confirming.

A room's reward stays the same when rotated, but its exits change. The best orientation is usually the one that protects several future routes instead of creating one narrow corridor.

Using the Blueprint Menu

Press R2, RT or the assigned PC key to open the Blueprint. It shows the current layout of Mt. Holly, drafted rooms, empty squares and available connections.

Use it to answer four questions:

  • Where am I?
  • Which unopened doors still lead somewhere?
  • Which routes are blocked?
  • Where should the next room be drafted?

Check the Blueprint Before Backtracking

The shortest visible hallway is not always the shortest useful route. The Blueprint helps you avoid spending Steps on unnecessary returns to rooms that no longer contain anything valuable.

Look for Stranded Openings

A door aimed at the edge of the estate or an already occupied square cannot extend the floor plan normally. Identify these openings before investing more Steps in reaching them.

Plan More Than One Route

A single northbound path can fail after one bad draft. Preserve side branches that can curve back toward the centre or connect to another route.

Using the Room Directory

Press R1, RB or the assigned key to open the Room Directory. The Directory records discovered floor plans and provides useful information about rooms you have encountered.

Consult it when a draft offers a room whose function you cannot remember. A few seconds in the Directory may prevent a costly dead end.

What the Room Directory Helps You Track

  • Previously encountered room names.
  • Room colors or categories.
  • Door layouts.
  • Drafting costs.
  • Known room effects.
  • Information discovered through continued exploration.

Do Not Treat the Directory as a Complete Solution

It records useful game information, but it does not replace personal notes. Connections between documents, dates, characters and puzzles often span several rooms and days.

Using Regular Items

Press Triangle or Xbox Y to use the currently held item when that object supports direct activation. The effect depends on the item and the situation.

Some items are used automatically or contextually instead. For example, a key is usually consumed by interacting with a compatible locked door rather than pressing the item button in an empty hallway.

Read the Item Description

An item's obvious purpose may not be its only use. Tools can interact with environmental details, room features or other objects.

Before using a rare item, consider:

  • Whether the effect is permanent or temporary.
  • Whether another room could improve it.
  • Whether it combines with another tool.
  • Whether it should be preserved for a harder-to-reach location.
  • Whether the current run can realistically reach that location.

Do Not Press Use Item Randomly

An accidental use can consume a limited resource or activate an effect in the wrong location. Aim at the intended target and confirm that the prompt matches your plan.

Using Special Items

Press Square or Xbox X to activate the equipped Special Item. Special items often have broader or more unusual effects than ordinary inventory objects.

The command may be unavailable when no special item is equipped or when the current location does not permit its use.

Check the Special Item Before Entering a Puzzle

Remember which object is assigned to Square or Xbox X. During a complicated room, confusing the regular and special item commands can waste an important resource.

Preserve Valuable Tools Between Days

Most carried items are lost when the day ends. Certain estate facilities can help preserve an item for later. When such an opportunity appears, store something that supports a specific future objective rather than the most common object in the inventory.

Resource Interfaces

The HUD tracks important resources such as Steps, Keys, Gems and Coins. These do not all serve the same purpose.

Steps

Movement between rooms consumes Steps. Opening menus, reading documents and examining objects does not normally require the same expenditure, so investigate thoroughly once you enter a room.

Keys

Keys open ordinary locked doors and are consumed when used. A key can rescue a route, but carrying several does not help when every draft becomes a dead end.

Gems

Some powerful or unusual rooms require Gems to draft. The cost is shown before confirmation.

Coins

Coins are used in shops, machines and other estate interactions. Save enough for an important opportunity rather than purchasing every minor benefit immediately.

Ending the Day

When Steps run out or the current route no longer offers useful progress, the day ends and Mt. Holly resets. The room arrangement and most temporary inventory are lost, but knowledge and permanent estate changes remain.

Ending a day is not equivalent to losing. A run can be successful because it:

  • Revealed a new room.
  • Provided a puzzle clue.
  • Unlocked a permanent addition.
  • Added information to the Room Directory.
  • Allowed a useful item to be preserved.
  • Confirmed that a proposed solution does not work.

Do Not Waste the Final Steps

When reaching the main objective is no longer possible, use the remaining movement to inspect unexplored branches, collect resources or revisit a room containing an unresolved clue.

How to Remap Blue Prince Controls

  • Open the pause menu.
  • Select Options or Settings.
  • Open the input or remapping section.
  • Select the active controller under Available Controllers.
  • Highlight an action.
  • Press the new button or direction.
  • Repeat for any additional actions.
  • Select Confirm to save the layout.

Choose Restore Defaults to reset the entire layout. Selecting Cancel exits without applying the pending changes.

Recommended Remapping Advice

Keep Interact on a Face Button

Interact is used more than any other command. Keep it where it can be pressed comfortably while controlling the camera.

Keep Blueprint and Directory Separate

These menus are opened frequently but serve different purposes. Assigning them to neighboring shoulder buttons makes the distinction easy to remember.

Keep Use Item and Special Item Distinct

An accidental special-item activation may be more costly than opening the wrong menu. Avoid assigning the two actions to inputs that are easy to confuse.

Use Stroll as Hold or Toggle According to Comfort

A hold input provides immediate control, while a toggle can reduce strain during detailed room searches.

Check Every Binding After Remapping

Scroll through the complete action list before confirming. A newly assigned button may conflict with a command farther down the menu.

Accessibility and Interface Settings

Recent versions provide expanded accessibility and interface options in addition to remapping.

Depending on platform and version, options may include:

  • Color-support features.
  • Customizable cursor presentation.
  • HUD display settings.
  • Motion-related assistance.
  • Text and interface adjustments.
  • Controller and keyboard remapping.

Puzzle information can depend on visual distinctions, so enable color-support labels when similar colors are difficult to identify reliably.

Can you view the Blueprint while choosing a room?

Yes. Open the Blueprint before confirming so you can check the required door directions.

How do you use an item?

Press Triangle or Xbox Y when the held item supports direct use. Some objects are activated by interacting with a compatible target instead.

How do you use a special item?

Press Square or Xbox X when a special item is equipped and valid in the current situation.

What does Stroll do?

Stroll slows movement, making it easier to inspect small environmental details and position the reticle precisely.

Can Blue Prince controls be remapped?

Yes. Current versions support controller and keyboard remapping.

How do you restore the original layout?

Open Remapping and select Restore Defaults.

Why does a door begin a draft instead of opening?

The door points into an empty square where no room has been placed yet.

Can a drafted room be undone?

Not through an ordinary undo command. Treat each confirmation as permanent for the current day.

Does opening the Blueprint consume Steps?

No. Use the menu as often as needed when planning a route.

Does looking around consume Steps?

No. Steps are tied mainly to moving between rooms, so inspect the current room thoroughly.

Why can I not use an item?

It may be contextual, require a compatible target or have no valid effect in the current room.

What happens when Steps reach zero?

The current day ends and the estate resets for the next attempt.

What carries over to the next day?

Knowledge, discovered information and unlocked permanent estate improvements remain. Most drafted rooms and temporary inventory do not.

What is the most important control habit?

Press R2 before confirming a room. Checking the full Blueprint prevents many accidental dead ends.

Final Control Advice

Blue Prince does not demand complex inputs. Its difficulty comes from pressing simple buttons at consequential moments. Cross can spend a key, commit a floor plan or activate a puzzle mechanism; Triangle and Square can use resources that may not be replaceable during the current day.

Stroll when searching, open the Blueprint before every important draft and use the Room Directory whenever a room's effect is unclear. Careful inputs preserve far more progress than fast movement through the estate.
