FIFA World Cup Most Likely to Have 48 Teams

FIFA World Cup

The head of football's governing body, Gianni Infantino says that football federations are "overwhelmingly in favour" of plans for a 48-team World Cup.

A tournament with 16 groups of three teams is planned as a 48-team World Cup, as FIFA president Gianni Infantino mentioned earlier this month. A decision will be made in January 2017, but any change to the 32-team World Cup format is unlikely to come in before FIFA World Cup 2026.

How a 48-team World Cup Works?
There will be 16 groups of 3 teams. The top two teams in each group would progress to the knockout rounds.
